Course was one of top priorities identified during recent master planning process.

An 18-hole disc golf course will open Thanksgiving Day at Richardson’s Breckinridge Park. The course, located near Parking Lot C off Brand Road, came about as a result of community input received during the 2022 update of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan.

Disc golf is played with a flying disc that is thrown from a concrete “tee box” into a “hole,” which is an elevated metal basket. The holes at the Breckinridge course are between 175 and 726 feet long. Similar to traditional golf, the winner is the player who completes the course in the fewest number of throws.

“We are very excited to open our first disc golf course,” said Yvonne Falgout, director of parks and recreation. “Disc golf is a fast-growing sport, and our residents told us during our master planning process that they wanted a course in Richardson. The terrain and natural features of Breckinridge Park make it an excellent home for our course, and we can’t wait for people to get out there and play.”

This 35-acre course was designed by Eric McCabe of Dynamic Disc Course Design, who has designed more than 80 courses across the country. Some of the courses have hosted Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) Amateur and Professional World Championships.

After an assessment of the City’s parks, the design firm recommended three potential locations for the new course: Breckinridge Park, Crowley Park and Fox Creek Park. Breckinridge was chosen due to its available parking, restrooms and the fact it has held disc golf tournaments previously on a temporary course. Caution signs have been placed along the trails near the course, and anyone walking on the trails is urged to be on the lookout for flying discs.

The new course will be open from sunup to sunset, seven days a week. Players can access the course layout and a digital scorecard through the free mobile application UDisc, which is available on both Apple and Android devices.

In the future, the Parks and Recreation Department plans to schedule instructional clinics for those wishing to learn about the game. More information on these clinics and other programming at the course will be available in the future.
