City staff briefed the City Council Monday on the status of planned renovations for City Hall and the Richardson Public Library, in light of the fire that occurred at City Hall last August. Both renovation projects, part of the 2021 Bond Program approved by voters, were under design at the time of the fire and have been on hold while the extent of the damage has been studied.
Main points covered during Monday’s presentation included:
- Damage to City Hall is significant enough to warrant a complete rebuild of the structure
- Repairing and renovating the existing building would cost roughly $60 million, or 70 percent of the cost of constructing a new building (estimated at $85 million); the insurance claim is estimated to provide, at minimum, $15 million
- Construction of a new building would provide more energy efficiencies and a more user-friendly visitor experience that could be integrated with the Library
Additional funding would be needed for either City Hall options and will be considered by the City Council at future meetings.
