Black History Month Art Contest

Through Feb. 28 

Sponsored by the Richardson City Council in partnership with RISD, PISD and UT Dallas, this annual contest is open to students in grades 1-12 who reside within the City of Richardson or attend an RISD/PISD school in Richardson. 

Winners in each age category will receive $200 and will be recognized at a future City Council meeting.

Books, Live Music and More at the Library 
Displays and coming events this month concerning African American heritage:

  • In Darbey’s StoryWalk®: “Hair Love,” by Matthew A. Cherry and illustrated by Vashti Harrison
  • First floor main display features Black History books, DVDs and audiobooks
  • Singer-songwriter Kamica King brings a soulful performance pairing history and music Feb. 25 from 2-3 p.m. in the Basement Program Room
  • Window display: Kids pick a paper footprint and write on it what they would be willing to march about
  • Youth Services: Special bulletin board enables patrons to trace five different cars to different Civil Rights locations and see book covers that go along with these historic cities; youth may complete a word search for a chance to win a “journey” journal

This presentation will provide an intimate understanding of Black milestones throughout American history using personal examples and historical context. Senior Center membership not required to attend.  

Wildflower! Student Art Contest Now Taking Entries 
The Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival’s annual student art contest is accepting entries. With the theme of “The Richardson Express—Celebrating Richardson’s Railroad Roots,” the contest is open to all students in K-6th grade who live in Richardson or attend an RISD school. All entries must be designed on 12” white posterboards provided by festival organizers. 

Entrants may use colored pencils, crayons, markers or paints to cover the whole board with lots of color. Ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place as well as honorable mention in each grade level. Winners will also receive two Wildflower! Festival tickets. 

Winning artwork will be displayed in the Eisemann Center throughout the Festival weekend, May 19-21.
