Residents are encouraged to safely dispose of unused or expired medications at the upcoming DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event in Richardson.
The Richardson Police Department will host the event on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Police Headquarters, 200 N. Greenville Ave.
Held in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the event provides a safe, convenient way for residents to remove potentially dangerous medications from their homes while helping protect the environment.
Improper disposal of medications, such as flushing them down a drain or throwing them in the trash, can lead to contamination of waterways and increase the risk of misuse by children, pets or others.
Residents can drop off unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications for proper disposal. All solid dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers will be accepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain in their original containers with caps tightly sealed.
Items that will not be accepted include intravenous solutions, injectables and syringes due to potential hazards posed by bloodborne pathogens.
The event is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.
Year-Round Disposal Options Available
Residents who are unable to attend the event still have options for safe disposal throughout the year. Collection sites can be found by visiting www.dea.gov/takebackday and entering a ZIP code to locate nearby drop-off locations.
