City Council received a presentation Monday regarding the North Texas Municipal Water District’s (NTMWD) water supply planning, strategic financial plans and water conservation efforts.

Part of the Council’s annual budget preparations, Richardson’s water supplier reported:

  • NTMWD’s service area has grown from 2 million people in 2020 to 2.3 million in 2024,
  • The Long-Range Water Supply Plan is due for an update in 2026 and will incorporate long-range scenarios that include varying factors such as demand, supply and climate conditions,
  • Currently 30 percent of the water supplied by NTMWD comes from conservation and reuse, about the amount of an entire reservoir, and
  • There are six regional projects in the works to increase use of existing water supplies, including expanding the Leonard Water Treatment Plant and the creation of two new pipelines from Lake Texoma, with more than $1 billion devoted in 2026 to the projects.

The NTMWD serves 13 member cities, covering a total service area of 2,200 square miles.
