Staff from the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) gave a comprehensive update to the City Council Monday, outlining the main focus areas of NTMWD (water supply, wastewater treatment, and solid waste) and discussing current and future projects as well as projected costs.
Of note:
- The NTMWD service area is booming in population, with two of the top 10 U.S. counties in annual numeric growth (Collin County, #2, and Denton County, #6) as well as the top two counties in annual percent growth (Kaufman, #1, and Rockwall, #2); several NTMWD projects are underway including treatment facility and pump station expansions
- The second complete internal inspection of the pipelines that bring treated water from Wylie to Richardson was recently completed; initial findings show more than 90 percent to be in good shape, with three segments identified for repair
- NTMWD is conducting a holistic evaluation of all its systems to guide PFAS management (polyfluoroalkyl substances, or “forever chemicals,” which have been detected in water throughout the U.S.). Ongoing NTMWD water testing shows levels of PFAS in most parts of its service area (including Richardson) to be below new regulatory limits.
- NTMWD was created by the Texas Legislature in 1951 and serves 13 member cities, including Richardson, a service area of 2,200 square miles.
